Steve Brockley with Miss Emily Brown
On Friday April 30, the Salmar Classic will be host to a double CD release, Cross-Canada tour. Miss Emily Brown and Steve Brockley will both be playing in support of their new albums.
Hailing from Iroquois, Ontario, Miss Emily Brown is touring her new album In Technicolor, based on her grandmother’s WWII diary. This Canada Council sponsored songwriting project was released in January of this year. Miss Brown’s performance combines autoharp, vintage keys, guitar, music box, and her unmistakable voice.
Steve Brockley, a folk singer born in Vernon, started his musical journey as a sideman on guitar playing many different styles of music. The road brought him as far east as Montreal, and that’s where he decided to hunker down and shift his focus to writing. Starting anew as a singer/songwriter, Brockley has been compared to all sorts of people, often corresponding to whatever his facial hair situation is at the moment. However, influences can be heard in his writing from Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, John Hurt, and a pool of
new and old time music that he loves. To record his self-titled album, Steve Brockley called up the best drummer and upright bassist he could think of, his good friends from out west, Leon Power (of Sunnybrae) and Kevin Bertram (of Kelowna), and spent a few days recording at the treatment room in Montreal. Recorded live off the floor to 2″ tape, Brockley’s first full length album has a classic sound that could not suit his songwriting better.
Tickets are available at Acorn Music, or at the door for $10. Doors open at 7:00pm, Friday April 30.
